Architecture: The Avant Building
Another building of federal history is simply across the street from the New Erabuilding, 200 Delaware Avenue. Once the site of a hallowed Delaware mansion, the house was slated for demolition in 1965 to make way for a 16 floor federal building designed in the style of brutalism. Housing 50 federal agencies with and 1,200 workers the national government used the building until it became dated in 2006 leaving the Dulski Federal Building up for bid.
Uniland and Acquest Development bought the concrete block and gutted it to the steel skeleton then rebuilt the current $85 million glass enclosed Avant. Housing a hotel, businesses, offices, and condominiums the Avant considers itself a “vertical community.” The condos range anywhere from $300,000 to $1.73 million. If you’re interested, take a virtual tour.
